Day one of Internship: Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012
Up at the crack of dawn- well 7 a.m.; freshly showered, with make-up and hair done up, I am ready to set out on my first day of interning. With jitters and excitement in hand I leave my house in confident strides, only to realize I forget to grab my lunch-that I prepared the night before, which I never do!
With only one minor setback, I continued on.
Feelings at that moment: worried, and unsure. Worried to make silly mistakes and having a hard time adjusting. Unsure of what is expected of me from my first day.
All these feelings were set to rest as I went up in the elevator and met with my coordinator for the day. She gave me a quick tour of the office-size of it is deceiving from the lobby, a lot bigger than I thought it would be. This is when it first hit me that I am now a “9-5” work gal in downtown Toronto!, “gulp”.
The day continued with countless introductions and "how-to" lesson to setting up my email and computer accounts, etc.
I was assigned to do some reception duties, followed by meeting various teams, and being told about the clients and the work I will be witnessing and helping to work on. Then the big moment came, I was given my first task! And I must say I fumbled over and over again with this one. It was all so surreal to me; one moment I was in class and the next in the real world doing real "people" work! Freaked me out a tad. I was also had a cold(great timing eh?!), which made me feel even more overwhelmed. I felt that all my 2.5 years at Humber amounted to nothing. As the first day came to end, I went home and straight to bed.
This overwhelming feeling continued onto the next day, until the 3rd when I started to get a feel for things and tasks didn't seem so scary and hard.
By the end of the week I didn't want to leave. This all quickly reminded me of kindergarten; scared and not wanting to be there the first day and then never wanting to leave. Yes my life has come full circle, o boy!
This cycle always happens when I start something new: school, work, etc. I knew I needed to give myself some time to adjust. and that no one expected me know everything off the bat; this is my first time doing anything like it.
In conclusion, I am enjoying my time here and learning a lot really fast. And agency work is hard, fast, fun and FAST!
*Although I don’t see it being a big problem to write the name of the place I am interning at, I’ll stay on the safe side and keep it nameless in my blog (however, those that know me personal or have me on LinkedIn will be aware)
